Ontario's Drive Clean

Here's what you have to do if your vehicle requires a Drive Clean test.

Your vehicle(s) must pass the Drive Clean test before your licence plate can be renewed. Here’s what you have to do:

  1. Bring your vehicle to us! (2345 Fairview Street, Burlington)
  2. Relax. Take the test.
Your vehicle is driven onto a dynamometer, a type of treadmill, and the exhaust is computer analyzed for pollutants. If your vehicle can’t be tested on a dynamometer for any reason, its emissions are measured at two pre-determined idle speeds. The maximum fee for a test is $35. Applicable taxes are extra.
  3. Got a pass? Congratulations! Now go get your licence plate renewed.
If your vehicle passes the test, you'll get a pass report. And the results of your Drive Clean test are transmitted to the provincial vehicle registration system, so that you can renew the registration. However, you should take your pass report with you to renew your licence plate at a Driver and Vehicle Licence Office or a self serve kiosk, in the event there is a misunderstanding.
  4. Fail the test? Fix the problem and go for a re-test.
If your vehicle doesn't meet its emissions standards, you will receive a report describing some of the possible causes of failure. You will need to make the necessary repairs in order to pass a retest. Have the repairs done at an accredited Drive Clean facility. You are entitled to two retests at $17.50 each, if the retests are performed at the facility where the original test was conducted. All applicable taxes are extra. Under certain conditions, you may also qualify for a conditional pass through Drive Clean’s Repair Cost Limit.
